A magnificent sunset this evening, fewer cars on the roads means the overall air is cleaner and the sunsets are spectacularly pink. Some of these cloud shapes could have been formed by aircraft streaking through the skies. Altogether its created a magnificent visual melody for a few short moments.

Since about 1995 I have intermittently dropped in at various studios around los angeles to spend 3 hour sessions drawing or painting from live models in their various poses. This is a recent sketch of the model holding a pose for 20 minutes, so its fairly fast painting - a work on paper. I invent the context of the paintings - sometimes I skip some of the models poses and take the extra time to paint in some context or pattern.

I should add that I have also recently got some prescription glasses and future paintings I work on may well be less incidental that this. I will probably paint in more details and fix things up in the future paintings and leave no such loose ends like the eyes of the figure on the left where paint seems to have splattered and stayed where it landed ...heck, I might take another round on this painting withe the new glasses on and see if seeing clearly can make a difference. ;)

These bells are on a cathederal on Temple Street, not far from the music center and the disney concert hall. The church is alongside the harbor freeway and there are plans to cap the freeway and create a surface park, which I think is an interesting concept that will chang eth face of the LA civic center in a radical way.

This donut shop is on Manchester Boulevard at the corner where it crosses the 405. The tar paint markers caught my eye, now you can see what I stopped to observe.

There was a time in Los Angeles when businesses created these large sculptural signs and architecturally artful shops. A few remain intact, although come to think of it - this may the last of its kind in LA. Currently Los Angeles signage ordinances are in such disarray and over burdoning, I should imagine creating something like this would be simply impossible now.

I was cycling past this famous place today and took the opportunity to stop and capture some photos of the famous large donut atop Randy's Donut shop. No I did not get a donut, I just took the photo and continued on my journey. It was an overcast day with promised rains, which did not fall while I was on the outing.

If you read this blog as it seems some people do, here is a pic of me, the author of this dwarl, and my camera that takes the lovely photos I know people enjoy seeing. The pic was taken in a museum last weekend, me, the living seen in ancient mirrors against a centuries old painting. Everyone who made the frame and the painting is long dead, I am part of the living generation, as are you - but in time we too will fade away and all that will be left of us is the arts and sciences of our time. Blogs might survive time, I will never know.

This is the LACMA display of their collection of Giacometti bronzes. Can't say I like the way they have chosen to display the works, it just seems to so wrong to place them on a stage, above and removed from the people who see the works.

Seen by me and my carmera lens from the seat of a bicycle: a view of a channel in the Marina del Rey yacht harbor, 2 sailboats in the lase afternoon sunlight. The last few weeks I have been riding my bicycle from Santa Monica to Marina and beyond. I pick up the marina bike path on Washington Boulevard and follow it until it connect the Ballona Creek bike path and take that Eastbound for a few miles.

Terracotta color ranges at the base, the color of earth and the old Biltmore Hotel built of brick with steel and glass skyscrapers towering above.

This is a picture of 2 centuries of building styles and the wide open skies far above. There were people all around the day I captured this photo, but I waited patiently until the moment when few were in the frame. I wanted to capture just the architectural vista. The wonders humans have built.

Not so long ago I was on a plane flying out of LAX, the airport of Los Angeles, and I always prefer a window seat. Most often I see the airport from outside, but this day I had a view from inside a plane and found what I think is an interesting image, with road striping creating a visual pattern.

For context, a plane overhead when I was near the airport on a bicycle, and a pic of the LAX entry sign from when I was on a mass transit vehicle heading into the airport.

2 recent photos, a nature connection

First, a photo of this red dragonfly I saw recently in my garden. A spectacular insect I was lucky to capture with my camera up close to it. A bit blurry but still, enough visual data to be amazed at the wing structure.

All good and well, but insects carry with them certain issues and give clues about surrounding nature. Dragonfly likes water, probably standing water and since there is none of that where I live I have started to look around for where the standing water might be. It took about 10 days to realize where this insect might have come from.

The Los Angeles River, which is not a river, but is a flood control system of concrete channels. I observe that these channels have standing water in them that is turning green with what looks like algae of some kind.

Close by here there is a concrete channel with what looks like an inch or two of standing water. This leads to a larger channel down at the Ballona Creek area which in turn leads out to the ocean. I happened to cross the Centinela Boulevard bridge over this river the other day and indeed, it was rich with the green algae where ducks and ducklings were having a feast.

So there you have it. The mystery of the dragonfly is solved.

Looking up down at City Hall in Los Angeles

I was in City Hall on other business and got lost finding my way to the proper meeting place and found myself in one of the elaborate 3rd floor rotundas and took this photograph of the painting inside the dome. It says "Masters of Education hold in their hands the future of the world". It is surrounded by a ring of astrological signs. Given that the high school dropout rate in Los Angeles is above 50%, one wonders what future the education masters have created for the city, never mind the world.

This appears to be written in gold leaf, a rich material. There appears to be no shortage of gold/money for "education masters" regardless of their dismal failure in educating the youth of this city. For balance, I should get a real world photograph of the youth of the city doing a perp walk into the court systems, for a life of crime and courts, which is what they seem to earn because the education system has failed them so. But I can't do that, the youth are protected from being photographed, its quite illegal to have them in a picture. (Which incidentally accounts for the eerie lack of people in my photographs of public places in the city, I patiently wait until most all people, some of whom might be "children", are out of the frame).

17 minutes of art

I went to a live model session this week after a break of many months of not going to make art from live model study. On the left, 15 minute pose, and on the right, 2 minutes - the circle in the middle is the gesture of a clock. It is the same model - Albeit she was holding the pose on the left, fact is she wasn't, there was a great deal of movement during the 15 minutes. Another artist at the sketch session complained about the movement during the pose, in particular the right arm moved a lot, I said "so what" the models always move, they never do hold a pose. All in all it was an unpleasant environment, the lead artist was away and had left someone else in charge and I think the hostile ambiance is why I painted red into this study and its likely I will delete this post within a few days too.

They say that the heiress or the wife of a silver mining magnate posed for this statue, and probably paid for it too. It sits on a tall pillar in Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is an icon of that city. It is a bronze and it has gained a delightful green hue patina from its proximity to the ocean air. The elaborate Corinthian style column it sits on is more visible in this photo than it is in person where the eye is drawn up to the figure.

The day I took this photograph I nearly got terminated through a foolish decision while riding a bicycle. I almost rode into a fast moving car coming from the other direction but I was able to jump down from the bike and come to a dead stop, and so missed the speeding car by a full 5 inches. I was making a left hand turn onto the street in the picture, and after my brush with near death I was walking the bike on the sidewalk and looked up and saw the darth vader style new buildings on the left, with a view of old dorky LA on the right. It occurred to me that LA got stuck in a limbo between outrageous development and quaint blight. How long the dichotomy will last is anyone's guess.

Took a wrong turn and landed up

in a lot that was right under the flight path and only realized it when a jet plane flew directly over my head and not far from it either . Thunderous noise, alarming, I might have sworn in exclamation over the blast of noise as I was cycling along in the ocean breeze. But alls well that ends well, I did not have a heart attack I did not incur health care costs. Cycling must be good for the heart.

I must remember not to cycle near the landing path of planes. I recovered from shock enough to take my camera out of my backpack and take some photos of another day in LA as seen from a bicycle.

And yet, I took that wrong turn again yesterday, on June 17, 2011, and this is the photo I took, it shows a double stop

Drum circle on Venice Beach in Los Angeles

The tire tracks are in a circle too, that is why I like this photograph. It is though, tire tracks of law enforcement vehicles, which ride along the beach as though they own it, which they sorta do. But so do the people in the drum circle, so it is a shared public beach. If there could be a soundtrack to these blog posts and I had captured the sound of the drum circle wafting hypnotically through the breeze that day, this would be a compelling post indeed.

I really enjoy the architecture of this building in Culver City. It is my go to place to sketch from life, but more often that I sketch I cycle past this place and wonder wt how low key it seems and yet, it is the epitome of history of movie making in Los Angeles. This is the Culver studios, where Lucille Ball had her studios for her famous show, amongst other motion picture arts luminaries. Behind this discreet building are the massive sound stages where they shoot movies and TV show. The land was purchased by Mr. Ince and it is where it ever was, at the edge of the oil fields. A lot has changed since the pioneering days of movie making ...

This is my shadow on the bricks, and my bicycle up against the closed gate.

This morning the helicopter was flying around and making such a noise I went to see what it was about and where they were circling. It seemed to be a few streets over. I live in a garden community and it is possible this helicopter was searching for illegal marijuana plants, as part of a city wide raid. The news of the day reports a coordinated effort by the FBI, DEA and LAPD specifically looking for this plant.

All in all I was pleased when this helicopter flew off, it was very loud indeed.

Shortly before 9 am. As you can see, riding a bicycle in Los Angeles is not all that dangerous of late - the price of petrol at the pump may be keeping cars off the streets. This is Washington Boulevard in Culver City, with the famous old Helms Bakery building on the left hand side. I was in the middle of the road because I was in fact, turning left into the alley to get to the Helms Bakery building where I sometimes go to an art studio and sketch from a live model.

Oftentimes I am drawn to the garment district of Los Angeles. The various streets of garments and fabrics and beads and everything you can imagine about fashion (except haute couture) is available in the stores. The streets of the garment district are a rare buzz of pedestrian activities as everyone goes their fashionable way busy plying the goods of fashions. I take photographs there sometimes, this is a photograph from winter, early in January. All sorts goods sold at that store - fashion, shoes, accessories. From Los Angeles garment district the fashion goods are shipped nation wide, its a hub of activity.

I was on my bicycle commuting south from Culver City and I cycled past the place these bicycles were parked. I had to stop and take photographs of the blinged out bikes, they are so very Los Angeles. They were made by men in Inglewood, a part of the LA basin where they have numerous artsy types of workshops where people indulge their propensity to create. I very much liked the rear view mirrors on the raised handlebars, those would be very handy when cycling amidst Los Angeles traffic.

Next week, a whole lot of bus lines in the Los Angeles basin are changing service, from fabulous to less so, but what specifically the new changes will be I don't know. So far all I can tell is that every bus I make use of will be undergoing a change in service, or be cancelled altogether. My route to downtown in particular, may become more complicated.

Its not all bad though, the busline pictured above, the Rapid 715 is to be cancelled, and given the ridership of this line that my photo illustrates, it makes good sense to end that rapid line. 715 resources are going to be folded in the 115 line down Manchester and that will be great, more 115 buses in that corridor is a good idea!

Not where I am, here there is no rain. In fact, the sky is clear with scant puffy clouds and full moon light bathes my sculpture garden so brightly it is uncanny.

A full moon night this one is. Makes me long for my long lost 35mm camera and the old film onto which to burn the moonlit night. It would be an extended setting, with aperture set fairly wide, with camera static on a tripod and if I had this long lost camera I would get no sleep tonight because I would be taking pictures to and through the dawn.

But the 35 camera is long ago lost (it was stolen actually) and the digital camera I have has hidden the camera controls so deep in its mini menus I can't find the ones I would need to capture this full moon bright light night.

Facebook is like an octopus, tentacles itself into people's lives

Reading the news today I see a man who is exactly half my age explain his intention to integrate facebook even more into people's lives with some email-text-IM combo thing.

This young man has no apparent concept of privacy and a private life and the passage of time which ordinarily makes people drift in and out of lives of people they meet along life paths.

Perhaps society will bend itself to adapt his vision of abject lack of privacy, or, perhaps not.

People change as life progresses. 26 years ago, when I was 26 (the current age of Mr Zuckerbook, whose life is an open book), I was passionate about things that don't matter much to me now. All the people I had met over 26 years, our paths crossed, they went on with their lives and I with mine. If all the people I have met the past 26 years were emailing/texting/IMing me I would be dizzy in the depths of the past, immersed in it, stuck in the past.

I can't imagine what could be on record about me and the people I have met and know if it had been detailed by the day or the hour on a computer in the sky that has a memory exceeding the memory of elephants. Well, OK, it has been my life and I live it so I could imagine what would be on record about me had facebook been around 26 years ago but I sure am glad its not there. My personal life is personal and private and thats just fine.

That being said, Facebook has tentacled itself throughout society and business so it is inevitable I will sign up there and be a page of data amidst 1/2 billion people. Can't say when exactly that will happen ...

Just a note to say that I am shocked anew almost every time I read the internet and what people choose to post about their personal private life and the underbelly of their issues. There was a time when certain things were not fit for public disclosure but the internet now seems to disregard that ancient wisdom and people post excruciating details of their private dilemmas. I don't ascribe to that philosophy, of telling all to any and everyone. The internet is vast, it reaches around the entire planet and what is posted gets to live on because like cockroaches, posts on the net cannot be readily killed. Post multiply quicker than cockroaches though. Unlike cockroaches, the posts are not contained to one small abode - they multiply and proliferate at a rate most humans cannot as yet comprehend.

It was taken in my garden, where I had planted the seeds. They had taken root and were in full bloom when I captured this lovely image. California poppies and cosmos, in the spring of 09. These flowers were my solace that year - the cosmos grew to be taller than me in the summer, after the spring.

At Beverly Hills Courthouse this morning I shot this photograph of a young woman in trouble. I was taken with how this woman is surrounded by men, not the adoring kind of men but the lawyer and police men.

She is like a rabbit in a fox hunt.

800 law enforcement officers made arrests in LA today

pertaining to drugs and gangs, pre dawn search warrants were executed today and 61 arrests according to local news. This is mentioned here on dwarl blog because it is several months since a last sweep of search warrants on houses linked to drugs back on December 2, 2009. Justice works slowly, almost a year has passed since the first sweep.

Paint is so luscious, it can take any shape.

I am working on this painting of "The Thinker", it is a dark weathered bronze on a hill overlooking the bay.

It is a statue by a French sculptor whose name was Rodin,

A bronze cast from the 19th Century is in San Francisco in a building all about the French, their idealism, their exquisite taste for beauty and grandeur.

I finished this painting on 11/11/10

I might get to do a bit more work on it, or not, I don't know.

I was away from LA and found I missed it so, surprisingly.

I had a week of no PC and no TV, just Dickens book for entertainment.

And hot weather in a city where its supposed be foggy, and I return to LA and here the fog is, and its lovely,, so cool, so calm, so blissfully quiet.

I am a bit rusty on the writing, but hold that thought, I have much to say and a great many photographs from my recent artscapade! I got one of those 4GB cards for the digicam and clicked away at the shutter I did -- some amazing photographs to be unveiled soon ....

There were rainbows, double rainbows and lightening in the distance, and then this spectacular sunset tonight in Los Angeles. I did not have my camera on me to capture the rainbows, but I did get up on the roof in time to catch this spectacular sunset.

Like an oven, no breeze, just hot air baking the basin. Broke records, broke the thermometer -- they only had one, no back up nor second one to verify readings (that is strange in a land that plans and has contingencies for everything). All in all today is in the record books for sweltering heat.

Now the sun has set and I remark that today is Google's 12th birthday - happy birthday Google! Borne into being on this day in 1998. Interesting I had my epiphany in August of that same year, at the same time Google was going through its evolution into being ...

And as I meander around the web, (using google of course) I find myself studying Tesla's coil -- a coil being a symmetrical spiral. I was looking to the date electricity got invented - appears to be the late 19th century, in the 80s of that century, or thereabouts.

We still pretty much use the technology of the first inventions of electricity using coal and gosh knows that's a dirty way to get light at nights --- by many accounts it is causing climate change -- and today it felt like a change, such heat - akin to the heat of the desert ...

Anyway, about Tesla's coil, it is recorded as patent No. 454,622 and there is an official website for the man's work. Tesla Science, a record of his inventions ...

And so, this coil of Tesla makes its way onto my dwarling board at the end of a very hot Autumnal day.
